The union that represents security personnel at the Bernalillo County Courthouse and Juvenile Justice Center has filed a complaint with the county labor board alleging Sheriff Dan Houston won’t open negotiations with the group.
Richard Sawin, president of Local 61 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said the union’s members have been “treated like rented mules.”
“We’re not asking for anything other county employees don’t already have,” he said in a news release.
The Sheriff’s Office, meanwhile, said it has taken steps to start negotiations.
“The sheriff and his representatives are committed to conducting these negotiations in good faith,” Sgt. Sam White said.
