About Council 18

AFSCME Council 18

New Mexico’s public service employees are one of the state's most valuable resources.

We safeguard and maintain our parks, public roads, and public buildings - from nurses to child care providers, sanitation workers, public safety, corrections and detention facilities, water and transportation systems - we form the backbone of an effective public service system that helps to promote opportunity and improve the lives of all New Mexicans.

Council 18 is the umbrella organization that houses the various city, county, and state locals affiliated with the American Federation of State County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) in New Mexico.

AFSCME’s 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen with members in hundreds of different occupations — AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and prosperity and opportunity for all working families.

In New Mexico, Council 18 helps sustain communities throughout the state by representing workers at the bargaining table. We have consistently won improved wages, benefits, and working conditions for New Mexico's public service employees.
